Jay Bennett for Grand Ledge School Board

Re-elect on November 8, 2016

My passion for education and community have led me to this venue of public service. If elected to another term, I pledge to do my part for the students and staff in Grand Ledge. I will continue to work with my fellow board members, administration, staff, students and community members to ensure that the Grand Ledge Public Schools continues to offer a world-class education while also offering opportunities, guidance and support so that all students can be successful.

I am a certified board member through the Michigan Association of School Boards (MASB) and currently hold a Level 2 Award of Merit. This designation is based on my attendance and completion of all level 100 professional development classes offered by MASB.

I have recently been appointed to my second 3-year term on the MASB Government Relations Committee. This committee assignment helps to keep me informed on the latest in education policy and legislative activities at the local, state and national levels.

I am a married father of two Grand Ledge students, one at Grand Ledge High School and one at Hayes Middle School. I currently work as an educational consultant with MASB. This involves working with school boards from across the state in areas of board development, governance, and strategic planning.

I currently serve as the Secretary on our board and I have also served terms as Vice-President and President. I was first elected in 2011 and I am currently running for a 6-year term in the November 8th, 2016 election. I previously served as the Vice-President of the Willow Ridge PTA and have been active as a youth coach and elementary reading mentor in both Delta Township and Grand Ledge. I also work as a volunteer youth advocate with CASA for Kids Inc. in Eaton County.

I have my BA and MA from Western Michigan University in teaching and special education. I was previously a teacher in the Kalamazoo area where I taught middle and high school special education in the public schools and the county juvenile home. I have also worked as an online teacher and class developer for the Michigan Virtual School.
